Am I covered if I drive someone else's car?
In most states, you would be covered through the vehicle owner's policy- if he or she gave you permission to use the car.  Your own policy may also cover you once the vehicle owner's coverage is exhausted.

What is someone else is driving my car and has an accident?
The other operator would be covered as long as you insured the car and the other person was driving it with your permission.

When should I buy my own auto insurance?
It depends. If you're buying a new (or used) car, you should arrange for auto insurance before you take possession of the car.  Also, if you are currently covered on your parent's policy but are planning on purchasing your own insurance, be sure to get it before you are removed from your parent's policy. You'll need to call the company well in advance to assure that you don't have any gap in coverage.

What information do I need to provide in order to get a policy?
While the requirements might be slightly different depending on the state and your individual circumstances, in general, here's what you'll need:

  • Your drivers' license number, as well as the driver's license numbers of any person who will be listed as "other drivers" on your policy
  • Your VIN (vehicle identification number) which is shown on the title and the state registration card.
  • The title (if it's an out of state vehicle
  • Your most recent declarations page from your previous policy or  if you were on your parent's policy, their declarations page.

When I rent a car, do I need to purchase any of the optional coverage from the rental company?
Most rental companies offer liability, medical payments, and collision coverages.  Depending on the coverages extended by your auto insurance policy and your health care plan, you may not need any of these coverages.  Allstate for example, extends both liability and collision coverages to rental cars, so you may not need to purchase extracoverage from the rental company.  If you rent a moving van or trailer, you may need the extra coverage. It's best to consult with your insurance agent as well as your health care provider; prior to renting to be sure you know what coverage you might need.

Insurance Bills What happens if I am late with a payment and I receive a cancellation notice?  Can I just wait for my next bill?
Even if you think your late payment crossed the cancellation notice in the mail, you must submit your next installment.  We must receive the full minimum amount due by the due date and time shown on the cancellation notice.

Why do I continue to receive a monthly statement when the minimum amount due is zero?
As long as there is an outstanding balance on your account, you will continue to get a monthly bill. If you paid more than the minimum amount due in a previous month, your current monthly minimum amount due may be zero.  The only payment that you need to make will be for the minimum amount due.  However, you may pay your balance off at any time.
